I was half way across to the Mainland. I then remarked "What is a correct signal" being under the impression that it was a mistake and not an accident that had caused the confusion in the signals.
In answer to Mr May. After the Police Boat came on board with the wounded Turnkeys about six minutes elapsed before I started in pursuit. I am sure before I got to the place where the convicts landed that I saw the "perfect" recall Signal.
I, John Kent, am Corporal in 102 Coy, Royal Engineers. I remember the 21st instant, I went with Mr Collins and others in pursuit of the Convicts; this was little before 10 a.M., about half way across I looked round. I saw a Ball at the main Signal Flag Staff and another at the Western yard arm. This would be about ten minutes after we started from the Hulk I saw only one ball was at the West yard arm. I don't remember anything being said when we saw the signal.
